How to split a food delivery order with coworkers

Start with the final order receipt

An order basket may differ from the amount actually charged. Check substitutions, unavailable items, packaging, service fees and delivery costs. Keep any refund separate until it is confirmed.

Do not treat delivery, courier tip and platform service as the same fee. If an item price already includes a charge, adding it again inflates everyone’s share. For the first calculation, use the final item prices after any item-specific discounts.

A lunch order for three coworkers

Alex orders a meal for 12, Ben one for 18, and Cara one for 24. A shared side costs 6 and is divided equally. The food subtotals are 14, 20 and 26. Delivery is 6.

If the group agrees to equal delivery fees instead, add 2 to each food subtotal: 16, 22 and 28. Both methods total 66. Choose the rule explicitly rather than silently switching between them.

The bill split calculator allocates its service/delivery field proportionally. To model equal delivery, leave that field at zero and add delivery as a separate item with one share per participant.

   For proportional delivery, use a common charge. For equal delivery, create a separate delivery item and have each participant claim an equal share; do not also enter it as a surcharge.

   Send the bill link. Each coworker claims their meal and any agreed shared items.

   Check that the result matches the charged receipt. Pay the person who placed the order outside Splitopia, then record the received payments.

Handle discounts, refunds and late additions

For a discount on a particular meal, use that meal’s reduced price. For an order-wide promo, agree the distribution and reconcile the discounted item totals with the receipt before sharing. This calculator does not accept negative discount lines.

If someone adds a drink after you shared the bill, update the actual order before settling. If a refund arrives later, tell the affected participants and reconcile it separately; do not promise an automatic refund or payment from Splitopia.
