How to split shared dishes, tip and service charge fairly

Short answer
Everyone pays for their own dishes, a shared dish is split only between the people who ate it, and tip, tax and service charge are split in proportion to each person’s item total, not per head. Per-head extras make the person who ordered less pay more than their share.
The fair rule in three steps
- Own dishes: each person pays for what they ordered.
- Shared dishes: split each one only between the people who actually shared it.
- Extras: add up each person’s items, then split tip, tax and service charge in the same proportion.
Worked example: two friends, one shared dish, 10% service
Anna and Ben have dinner. Anna’s own dishes come to 1,200 and Ben’s to 2,400. They share a starter for 600. The restaurant adds a 10% service charge. The numbers work the same in any currency.

When people take different amounts of the same item
Now add 3 lemonades for 900 (300 each): Anna drank 2 and Ben 1. Split the item by quantity, not in half, and the service charge follows automatically.

Tip, tax and service charge: what’s the difference?
- Tip: a voluntary amount you add for the staff.
- Service charge: a fee the restaurant adds to the bill itself.
- Tax or VAT: in many countries it’s already included in menu prices, so there’s nothing extra to split. Where it’s added at the end, treat it like any other extra.
- Discount: apply it to the items, so everyone’s dishes get cheaper in proportion.

Frequently asked questions
Should the tip be split equally or in proportion?
In proportion, when people ordered different amounts: each person tips on what they had. An equal split is fine when everyone’s orders cost about the same.
How do you split a shared appetizer fairly?
Split it only between the people who ate it. If two of four friends shared it, those two split it and the others pay nothing for it.
Should tax be split per person?
Split it in proportion to each person’s items. If tax is already included in the menu prices, there’s nothing extra to split.
What if someone didn’t drink alcohol?
