How to split a receipt by item in Telegram

Before you start

• Everyone needs a Telegram account. There’s no separate app to install and no Splitopia sign-up.
• One photo of the receipt, or up to 5 photos if it’s long. JPEG or PNG, up to 10 MB each.
• It’s free. Each person can create up to 5 new bills a day; claiming items in friends’ bills isn’t limited. See pricing and limits.

Step by step

   Open Splitopia and tap Scan

   Open @SplitopiaBot in Telegram and launch the Mini App. Tap Scan and select the receipt photo. For a long receipt, select all parts at once, in order.

   Wait for the bot, then review

   Recognition runs in the background. The bot messages you when the bill is ready. Open it and check every item, price, quantity and charge: the scan can make mistakes, and you can fix anything or add items before sharing.

   Share the bill in your group

   Tap Share bill and pick your Telegram group. The bot posts a message with the bill name, date and total, and a View bill button.

   Everyone claims their items

   Friends open the bill, tap a dish and press Claim Item. If several people shared a dish, each of them claims it and it’s split between them. For an item with a quantity (like 3 lemonades), each person picks how many they had.

   Split the bill

   When every item is claimed, the person who created the bill taps Summary, then SPLIT THE BILL. At least two people need to have claimed items.

   Everyone sees their share

   Each person gets a bot message with their share: every item, their part of the tip, tax and service charge, and their total. As friends pay you back, mark them as paid.

Tips for a clean scan

• Lay the receipt flat in good light and fit the whole width in the frame.
• Long receipt? Photograph it in parts and upload all parts at once, top to bottom.
• Upload different receipts separately: one bill per receipt.
• Always review the result before sharing. Fix a price or name in a few taps rather than arguing about it later.

No receipt? Enter it manually

Tap Manually instead of Scan and add the items and charges yourself. Sharing and claiming work exactly the same way. This is handy for taxis, groceries or a bill that was only shown on a screen.

Shared dishes, tip and service charge
